Mutiny's Open Source American Kei Truck Is Now a Real Design You Can Fork
Andy Didorosi's open source American kei truck moved from factory dream to published design. The plan: an LSV compliant assembled truck plus a kit version anyone can build, with every drawing on GitHub. Here's what the design gets right and where the skepticism is earned.
There are now three ways to chase an American kei truck. You can import a real one from Japan under the 25 year rule. You can put $25 down on the REO Runabout and hope a real estate broker becomes a truck manufacturer by 2028. Or, as of this summer, you can watch Andy Didorosi publish the actual engineering for a truck on the internet and invite you to help design it. The third option just got a lot more concrete, and this video is Didorosi walking through the design decisions in plain language, filmed as a livestream from the Detroit factory floor.
When we covered Mutiny Motors' factory in March, the open source truck was a stated ambition sitting behind the Sendpai halo build. Four months later there's a published design direction, a public repo, and enough specifics that Hackaday gave it a proper engineering writeup. That's the difference between a dream and a project.
What Mutiny Is Actually Building
The truck is electric, deliberately simple, and shaped like a kei truck for the same reason the originals are shaped that way: maximum bed on minimum footprint. The current design direction uses hub motors, which no production EV sold in the US has shipped with, and Hackaday is right to flag the unsprung weight problem that has kept them out of production cars. Didorosi's bet is that a low speed utility truck is the one application where the tradeoff works, since pothole harshness matters less at 25 mph with a bed full of mulch than it does on a highway commuter.
The radical part is not the drivetrain, it's the license. Every drawing and decision is going public through the Mutiny project site, where anyone can contribute, critique, or fork the design. Compare that to the REO Runabout, the other "Ameri-Kei" startup of 2026, which collected 5,500 deposits against renderings and a promise. Mutiny's approach inverts it: show all the work first, sell the truck later. One of these models lets you audit the engineering before you spend a dollar.
The Kit and LSV Split Is Regulatory Judo
Here's the clever structural move. Mutiny plans two versions. The factory assembled truck will target federal Low Speed Vehicle compliance, which legally caps it at 25 mph and restricts it to roads posted 35 mph or lower, the same class as street legal golf carts. The kit version is where it gets interesting: because kit built vehicles are generally registered under individual state kit car and homebuilt rules rather than federal motor vehicle standards, a garage built Mutiny could be geared for real road speeds in most states.
That split neatly routes around the FMVSS wall that blocks anyone from selling a new small truck in America, the same wall that makes the 25 year old import the only turnkey path today. But be clear eyed about what an LSV is: a 25 mph vehicle is a campus and neighborhood machine, closer to the side by sides in our kei truck vs UTV comparison than to a Suzuki Carry that cruises at 60. Kit car registration also varies wildly by state, so the highway capable version's legality will be a state by state patchwork, just like everything else in this hobby.
Open Source Cars Have a Graveyard, and Mutiny Knows It
Skepticism is warranted, because open source vehicles have been tried. OScar, CarBEN, and Wikispeed all produced designs, communities, and exactly zero vehicles you can buy. Hackaday raised that history directly. What Mutiny has that those projects did not is a 50,000 square foot factory, industrial tooling, a founder who has already drawn national coverage in USA Today for the effort, and a proven kei truck obsession in the form of a Tesla swapped Carry. Hardware plus community beats community alone.
The honest read: this is still the early design phase, and the video says so. Nobody should treat a Mutiny truck as an alternative to buying a truck this year. Treat it as the most interesting long game in the small truck world, and one you can actually participate in. The r/keitruck community has already picked apart the hub motor choice in exactly the way open source is supposed to work.
If You Need a Truck Before the Repo Compiles

Check your state on the legality guide, find an importer in the dealer directory, and if the open source itch persists, contribute to the repo while your Carry does the actual work. The best case future is both: a used JDM fleet keeping America hauling while Detroit figures out how to build the next one in the open.
